TENS

Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) is a method in which mild electrical currents are used to relieve pain. (TENS) helps release natural opioids through electrodes placed on the skin. Although TENS is used for all kinds of pain, it is most preferred in acute and postoperative pain. Studies on TENS have reported that TENS can be used safely in pain control. The effectiveness of TENS is estimated to depend on factors such as the stimulation area, frequency, intensity and duration of electrical stimulation. There are also studies that show that this method significantly reduces pain and the use of analgesics, increases the analgesic effect with its addition to opioids. This method, which can be effective in controlling the patient’s pain, is thought to be beneficial to the patient both physiologically and psychologically by reducing pain and discomfort.

Indications

• Painful conditions related to the musculoskeletal system (fracture pain, muscle strain, arthritis)
• Acute post-operative pain
• Cardiopulmonary pain
• Chronic pain (back and neck pain etc.)
• Labour pains
• Phantom pain
• Neuralgia
• Peripheral neuropathies
• Pain associated with advanced malignancy

Contraindications

• Early pregnancy
• Pacemaker
• Irritated skin
• Epilepsy
