Chest (Respiratory System) Diseases

Chest (Respiratory System) Diseases

Chest diseases in cats and dogs are quite common and can be a concern for pet owners. Although clinical signs such as coughing and difficulty in breathing are generally considered to be indicative of a problem in the respiratory tract, they may also occur as a secondary cause in diseases of other organ systems (e.g., congestive heart failure). Respiratory diseases can occur in both young and old animals. Since the respiratory and immune systems are not fully developed after birth, the entry and spread of pathogens in the environment into the lungs can be easily ensured. In older animals, chronic degenerative changes that impair normal mucociliary clearance and immunological anergy can make the lungs more vulnerable to airborne pathogens and toxic particles.

Common respiratory system diseases in cats and dogs

Rhinitis and sinusitis: It means inflammation of the nasal mucosa and sinuses. Bacteria, viruses, fungi, neoplastic conditions, and mucous irritating agents can lead to rhinitis and sinusitis.

Tracheobronchitis: It is an inflammation of the trachea and bronchi. Pathogenic agents such as bacteria, viruses and fungi can cause this condition.

Pneumonia: It is a lung infection. Bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites can cause this condition.

Bronchopneumonia: It is a lung infection and inflammation of the air chambers.

Aspiration pneumonia: It is the arrival of foreign substances in the lung and the start of the inflammation as a result.

Pleural effusion: It is defined as the accumulation of fluid between the membranes of the lungs.

Pyothorax: It is the inflammation and infection of the membranes of the pleura.

Pneumothorax: It is the accumulation of pathological air in the thoracic cavity.

Tumours: They usually originate from another system and metastatically settle in the lung.

Diagnostic methods

In order to diagnose chest and respiratory system problems in cats and dogs, it is necessary to examine the history of the patient and the disease in detail. In addition, lung auscultation, complete blood count, evaluation of oxidization parameters, serological tests, thoracic radiography, thoracic ultrasonography, fluoroscopy, endoscopy, bronchoalveolar lavage, MRI and CT are very useful and provide important information for the diagnosis of the disease.

The most effective way to protect your pet as a pet owner is to visit your veterinarian regularly and catch any problems early. The earlier it is diagnosed and intervened, the longer and healthier life your pet will have.
